AppleBell Radio EP009 – Sweat Together, Stay Together

In this week’s episode of AppleBell Radio, we dig deep into the benefits of breaking a sweat with your partner (one of them is better sex).  We also address some of the barriers and challenges around exercising together and offer some tips to avoid these pitfalls.

Sharing in physical activity is relatively easy, so don’t make it more complicated that it needs to be.  You don’t have to be training partners or compete with one another.  Simply carving out some time for a hike, run, or workout is totally sufficient.

We’d love to hear from you on this!  What have you done that works well?  What makes it difficult?

AppleBell Radio EP008 – The Magic of Cooking at Home

Cooking at home is arguably the single best thing you can do to improve your health, wealth, and relationships.  It really does have magical powers.  We’ve challenged ourselves to eat as many home-cooked meals as possible and the results have been amazing…so we thought it important to share on this week’s podcast episode.

This conversation (like many of our conversations) starts with mindfulness.  We dive into the importance of engaging in the process of sourcing and preparing our meals, and we re-frame cooking as a meaningful part of our lives rather than a chore.

We also cover some of the most common reasons (or excuses) for eating out so much.  If you feel like you make boring recipes, don’t know what to buy, or just can’t cook…we’re here to help.

Bottom line: If you commit to cooking at home, you’ll eat better, save money, and grow closer to your family.  We challenge you to do it more!

We mention some good resources in this episode such as meal delivery services like Hello Fresh and Blue Apron; meal plans like Paleo Leap; and documentaries like Cooked.

We’d love to hear from you.  What works well?  What is holding you back?

AppleBell Radio EP007 – Mindful Spending

We’ve recently realized that it is damn expensive just to be alive.  As individuals and as a family, we’d like to think that we’re pretty responsible with money.  We try to live within our means, avoid silly purchases, and save a few bucks for a rainy day.  We thought that we were doing it right…until we looked a little closer and discovered that we too, had been caught in the trap!

While we both have good jobs and we’re able to meet our monthly financial obligations, we’ve gotten to the point where those obligations are just too many.  It all happened so fast and expectedly.  We bought a little house, a basic car, had a baby and BOOM…next thing you know, we’ve got a long list of expenses that seem to be non-negotiable.  There’s the mortgage and car insurance and electric bill and daycare and on and on it goes.  We just felt stuck.

However, after taking a good look at our monthly obligations and spending, we did identify a number of ways to reduce our overhead.

On this episode, we help you think about not just how you spend, but how you think about spending.  We illuminate the common ways that many of us mindlessly spend.  We also shed light on some simple ways that you can be much more mindful about how you allocate your funds.  Bottom line: You have way more control over your finances than you might imagine.

AppleBell Radio EP006 – How to take back, and own, your time

PRIORITIES…dun dun dun!  If I were to say, “You don’t lack time, you lack priorities”, whose voice would you hear?  Your parents?  Your high school coach?

This episode is all about priorities, and how we can use them to take back our time, own our decisions, and live our life with intention.  Our goal is for you to think of the word, “priority” with much less judgement and much more empowerment.

The truth is, we all have pretty well established priorities.  The way you spend your time and live your life is a reflect of them.  The problem is that many of us haven’t taken the time to examen our choices and understand why we make them.  In this discussion, we highlight strategies to become more mindful in how we set our priorities and live consistent within them.

Thinking hard about how we use our time and establishing clear priorities is a fantastic way to improve our quality of life and productivity.  Jeni has put together a really handy exercise to help you walk through the process.  If you’d like a copy of it, just send her a note at Jeni@AppleBellWellness.com and she’ll get you one right away.

AppleBell Radio EP005 – Resolutions

It is that time again.  The hope of the new year is upon us.  For many, it is a chance for a fresh start – an opportunity to finally get it right.  As we prepare to welcome in 2017, most of us will make resolutions.  We may want to exercise more or eat better or quit smoking or make in any number of self-improvements.  On this episode, we cover everything you need to know about understanding your true goals, setting good targets, and most importantly – sticking with it.

Along with some other helpful tips, we cover 5 big things to consider:

1) First, take some time to reflect.  Before diving headlong into a new goal, it is well worth your time to think back on the previous year.  How’d you feel?  What went well?  Where’d you struggle?  It is important to take a breath and appreciate where you’re currently at.  We share some great thoughts on reflection in our blog post, Room to Grow.

2) Once you think you have a goal, ask yourself “why”?  Maybe ask twice.  You want to really understand why this particular goal or resolution is important.  What is the true need or desire that you’re going for?  You may want to lose 10 pounds, but why?  What are you hoping that will do for you?

3) Determine if your resolution is sustainable.  The vast majority of people won’t stick to their resolution for more than a month.  There are lots of reasons why, but the biggest culprit is choosing goals that just aren’t realistic in the long run.  As a general rule, don’t resolve to do anything that you can’t see yourself continuing for the next two years.

4) Respect the process.  What will it take to achieve this goal?  Take some time to really think about the steps along the path.  Rather than focusing solely on the end result, commit to the process.  This will give you short-term wins and keep you moving in the right direction.

5) Be careful about sharing your resolution.  Conventional wisdom tells us that sharing publicly will help keep us accountable, but some recent research suggests otherwise.  With the rise of social media, we can actually decrease the chances of achieving our goal after sharing it with friends.  As it turns out, the kudos we get for simply setting the goal provide a dopamine hit and make us feel like we’ve already done something…even though, we haven’t.

We hope that you’ve had a wonderful 2016 and are excited about the year to come. Best of luck with all of your New Year’s Resolutions!  If you’d like a little additional help, you can check out our blog post on How to Avoid Resolution Pitfalls

AppleBell Radio EP004 – Two Whole People

For this week’s episode, we go “deep in the paint” on one of our favorite topics – relationships.  How we can find, choose, support, and grow with our partner are probably life’s most challenging questions.  Over the years we’ve learned a great deal about the dynamics of good (and bad) relationships and how we set the conditions for a fulfilling partnership.

Jeni and I will share what has worked well (and not so well) in our relationship.  We also challenge some commonly held beliefs and conventional wisdom like:

  • Why you should stop your mystic quest for ‘The One’
  • Why Jerry Maguire’s ‘you complete me’ line is screwing you up
  • Why you should throw away your checklist for ‘Mr/Mrs Right’

Like all of you, we are a work in progress, as individuals and as a couple.  Our best advice is to make your relationship a priority.  Human connections are fluid and ever changing, but if we communicate openly and often, we can probably weather whatever life throws at us!
